||Character & Plot
||For this unit, there will be discussions concerning the structure of plot as well as conflict and setting. We will also be reading three short stories that demonstrate the discussed literary elements: Amigo Brothers by Piri Thomas, After Twenty Years by O. Henry, and The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes.

||The Red Pony
||For this unit, the class will be reading the entirety of John Steinbeck’s classic novel, The Red Pony. There will also be discussions concerning life in the Salinas Valley in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and Steinbeck’s impact on the literary world.
||October 7 to December 20
||Return to Sender
||For this unit, the class will be reading the entirety of Return to Sender by Julia Alvarez. We will discuss style and form as well as the political issues raise by Alvarez in her writing.

|THE SECOND TRIMESTER CRT IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 21, 2020
||Poetry & Literary Elements
||For this unit, we will be reading a number of different pieces of poetry and discussing the various literary elements utilized within them.
||March 3 to March 13
||For this unit, we will be reading three short stories out of A Walk in My World as well as Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Monsters are Due on Maple Street. Through these stories, we will be looking at literature from different cultural backgrounds.
||March 24 to May 13
||With The Arrival, we will be reading a graphic novel. There will be a discussion as to what a graphic novel is and why we should read them.
||May 14 to May 26
|THE THIRD TRIMESTER CRT IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR MAY 28, 2020
|LITERATURE CIRCLES & INDEPENDENT READING
||During the first trimester, students will be grouped up and will have the opportunity to pick a novel that they will be reading throughout the trimester. They will be filling out a reading log, creating a three-volume newspaper to go along with their novel, as well as taking a short quiz on the novel that they chose.
||September 9 to November 8
||During the second trimester, students will be grouped up and will have the opportunity to pick a novel that they will be reading throughout the trimester. They will be filling out a reading log, writing a letter to the author, giving a presentation on the novel, and taking a short quiz on the novel that they chose.
||January 10 to March 2
||For the third trimester, students are expected to pick a novel on their own. By the end of the trimester, they will need to have done a literature analysis as well as taken a short quiz on the novel that they chose.
